1974 Norton Commando 850 “Blue Meanie“

1974 Norton Commando with a Norvil E- start. The motor and transmission has been completely gone through. There is too much to list what’s new on this bike. This bike comes with an amazingly interesting story that I will be sharing soon. I am currently putting on the break-in miles. This Norton is pretty fast. Being it has a 20 tooth final drive and a very torquey 7S cam, it’s the fastest Norton I have owned. I am asking 15K.

The previous owner, Bruce Vallone, was a passionate engineer, outdoorsman, and loved music, especially the Beatles.  He bought this 1974 Norton Commando Roadster 850 in 1980 and had his sister, who was an artist, paint the “Blue Meanie” from the Beatles famous “Yellow Submarine” on the battery cover.  Bruce enjoyed the Blue Meanie for about 22,000 miles until the late 1990’s when the rotating assembly let go in the motor.  As an engineer Bruce began the painstaking process of rebuilding the Blue Meanie.  Being a typical engineer he was very analytical and detail oriented about it.  He took his time with the project.

Sadly he passed away on Oct 10, 2020 without ever finishing the Blue Meanie project.  Bruce’s daughter (Kayla Vallone) offered her brother-in-law the bike.   He initially thought he would complete the project so he connected with me through a Marine Corps network.   He had heard of my passion for Norton Motorcycles through this network.  I spoke with him about what he would need to complete the Blue Meanie and he decided since I knew so much about the bike that I should take possession of it.

After hearing the story of Bruce’s legacy and how much the Blue Meanie meant to him I decided it needed a full nut and bolt restoration.  The motor and transmission had a complete tear down and was rebuilt with new parts from England.  The crank was balanced with the new Hepolite pistons. The rods were NDI checked for cracks.  The transmission was completely rebuilt with new gears and shafts. The final drive sprocket is a 20 tooth making it very peppy for city driving.   The new tires are from Heidenau.  Attached is an Invoice from Fair Spares New England.  These are just some of the highlights of the restoration.

For further details don’t hesitate to call.

1971 Norton Commando

This 1971 Norton Commando started life as a Fastback. Sometime in the late 70s or early 80s the Curley GRP fairing, tank, and seat was installed. I don’t know the actual history of the bike as I got it from an estate sale 10 years ago. It runs great and so there was no need to go through the motor. I kept this bike as a survivor and only fix or change as needed during my 10 years.
-The transmission was recently rebuilt and I changed the sprocket from a 19t to a 20t.
-The rear sets are the Norvil setup.
-The Carbs are the Amal Premier 932
– it has the upgraded center stand
– new side stand
– brand new exhaust pipes and megaphones.
– belt drive conversion
